Betty Bokarie

Biography:

Like all the middle-aged and elderly Bom-speaking women of Sampor, Betty Bokarie, a Bom speaker in her mid-fifties, remembered singing in only Bom when she and her age-mates went through the Sande initiation decades before. When DKB visited, she was not one of the most competent Bom speakers of Sampor, however, and distinguished herself mostly by performance of the narrative and song/dance combination featured here: “Bug Off!” which may have been her own creation, since no one else in other villages offered their own versions.
